It all started in 1997, when Aafke and Sarah first heard the music of the Dutch punk band “De Heideroosjes”, and decided they would dedicate their lives to punk. At that time Sarah played the violin, Aafke the harp. So they only lacked a drummer, bass player, guitarist and singer… It all seemed pretty hopeless, and it took quite a while before things changed. But ultimately, after six long years, the band was completed with Marlein and Annemiek, two classmates of Sarah’s. Annemiek was able to play some chords on guitar, and Marlein happened to have an old drum-kit. Sarah saved her pocket money to buy a bass guitar, and Aafke decided to sing – someone had to do it. And that is how it all started on a rainy Sunday afternoon in 2003: Mister Blue Sky was born.
About that name: that wasn’t as obvious as it seems now. Previously the band was called HENK!, The Forgotten Raspberries and Paramecium. It wasn’t until a few gigs that the band members discovered that the average Dutch festival host isn’t able to pronounce that last name, and they changed their name into Mister Blue Sky. After the ELO record, indeed.
Spring 2004: Mister Blue Sky started performing. Initially at school and birthday parties, but soon they ended up doing some local festivals. In 2005 they won Rock to the Sun competition, and gained some studio time. The band recorded their first EP: The Twistaholic EP. This EP got some good reviews, and the band got to play in the Roos van Nijmegen competition. In 2007 Mister Blue Sky won this competition, and had a nice, long summer of playing at all sorts of festivals, including Appelpop, Huntenpop and De Valkhofaffaire. And yet again they received positive comments and critics. Meanwhile the band members also made carriers by themselves: Aafke Romeijn composed two pieces for the Nieuwjaarsconcerten in the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, and Annemiek Schilpzand received an award for Most Special Guitarist in the Gesel van Gelderland competition. During the winter of 2007-2008 the band went back into the studio and recorded their second EP: Happy Little Accidents. With this EP Mister Blue Sky is ready to conquer the world.
